Jim Neiger of “Flight School Photography”
and James Shadle of “In the Field Workshops” are
proud to present the “Best of Florida” workshop series
– the best time of year, the best weather, the best species,
the best colors, the best group size and the best instruction of it’s
kind. For the first time, a single workshop experience will combine
two of Florida’s most desirable locations. The workshops will
include the best of central and west central Florida’s nature
photography experiences. And to make sure your experience is second
to none, the “Best of Florida” workshops will be led by
instructors’ with unparalleled knowledge of the locations and
the subjects found there.
The eight day workshops will feature the unsurpassed avian opportunities
of both central and west central Florida in peak season. Four days
of learning and photography in central Florida with Jim Neiger and
four days of learning and photography in west central Florida with
James Shadle. This unique arrangement allows you to be exposed to
widest range of subjects and habitats imaginable. The subjects and
habitats are not the only thing that has a wide range. You will also
be exposed to very qualified, yet different instructional styles.
Come experience Florida at its very best! The main focus of these
distinctive workshops will be solely on you. Class size is drastically
reduced for maximum comfort, and the individual attention provided
will be without equal. Your needs will take center stage during this
unique experience. |

Flight
School Photography hosts 4 days of the 8-day Best
of Florida workshop. This segment of the workshop
will be conducted by award winning bird photographer
Jim Neiger. Jim has spent the past several years
observing, studying and photographing the birds
of central Florida and knows this avian-rich area
like no one else. Jim has also perfected unique
techniques for photographing birds in flight using
large telephoto lenses, hand held. Although your
needs, goals, and desires will dictate the focus
of the workshop, you will have the opportunity to
learn and practice Jim’s hand held, long lens
techniques for photographing birds in flight.
The workshops will be held in some of the most beautiful,
wild, and unspoiled wilderness areas of central
Florida. Central Florida lakes feature numerous
desirable subjects in the springtime, among them
the Snail Kite, which is the rarest bird of prey
in North America and the featured subject of this
segment of the workshop. The workshops are also
likely to provide participants with opportunities
to photograph other birds that are endangered and
rarely seen. Possible subjects are too numerous
to list.
The
4-day Central Florida segment will begin with
a classroom session devoted to teaching you how
to photograph birds in flight and also how to
safely use bird song recordings to maximize your
photographic opportunities. This will be followed
by six half-day photography sessions in the field.
The majority of the photo sessions will be conducted
via boat, because some of the best photographic
opportunities in central Florida are only accessible
by boat. This includes the endangered Snail Kite,
one of the most sought after avian subjects in
the world.
Jim’s
2007 pontoon boat was purchased and customized
specifically for use during photography workshops.
It is roomy (capacity of 12 people), comfortable,
and stable. The boat is equipped with an extremely
quiet, four-stroke motor for silent cruising.
It also has a powerful, silent, electric trolling
motor with wireless remote control. This allows
Jim to position the boat precisely and silently.
The boat can be configured with no top, a half
canopy to provide shelter from sun and rain, or
with a half enclosure that can completely protect
participants from the elements. The boat even
has a private changing room with a portable toilet.
Refreshments are provided during all workshops.

One photography session will be held on land to
photograph the remarkably co-operative Barred
and Great Horned Owls. Other species that are
possible during the land-based session include
Caracaras, Bald Eagles, Eastern Meadowlarks, Red
Shoulder Hawks, Sandhill and Whooping Cranes,
and many others.
In keeping with our main focus (you), each workshop
segment will be limited to only four (4) participants
so that everyone may photograph in comfort and
receive lots of personalized instruction.

Wild
Florida Photography, with lead instructor James
Shadle, is proud to host 4 days of the 8-day Best
of Florida workshops. James is an international
award winning nature and wildlife photographer,
as well as a Florida Freshwater Wetlands Master
Naturalist. His work has been featured in numerous
publications including: National Geographic Adventure
Magazine, Outdoor Photographer Magazine, Audubon
Magazine, National Wildlife Magazine, Pop Photographer
Magazine, Shutterbug Magazine, and Visions Magazine,
to name a few.
James has been conducting workshops for over
7 years. He is pleased to have several of his
past workshop participants now working as full
time photography professionals.
Taking
your photography to the next level requires learning
and understanding both the technical side of photography,
and just as importantly, your subject. As a Florida
Freshwater Wetlands Master Naturalist, James is
qualified to teach you about your subject, as
well as providing you with the technical skills
to photograph it beautifully. James has an old
school work ethic, with the skill and ability
to teach you the latest techniques using the latest
equipment.
The West Central Florida workshops are held in
some of the most beautiful coastal habitats Florida
has to offer. West Central Florida is home to
one of the largest Roseate Spoonbill rookeries
in North America. This rookery, as well as several
others in the area, is home to many of Florida’s
Threatened and Species of Special Concern waders.
The vast majority of these species will be photographed
in high to peak breeding colors. Expect to photograph
large flocks of birds, bird portraits, birds in
flight, courtship and nest building behaviors
and lots of ROSEATE SPOONBILLS! You can click
this link to view a gallery of images from some
of the past workshops in this area.
The
4-day West Central Florida workshop segment will
begin with a classroom session devoted to teaching
exposure theory, composition and field techniques.
The classroom session will be followed by six
half-day, in the field, photography sessions.
The majority of the photo sessions will be conducted
via boat. Boat is the only way to reach the very
best locations. Once on site, each participant
will have the option of shooting from the boat,
or for added mobility, they may shoot from the
shallow, firm bottomed waters surrounding the
area we will be working in.
James owns and operates the specifically customized
flats boat used in the workshops. The boat is
equipped with a 70hp outboard and a powerful,
silent, electric trolling motor with wireless
remote control. The boat also has a retractable
8’ Bimini Top, Sonar, GPS receiver, VHF
marine radio and an emergency flush-able potty
with a pop up enclosure. Refreshments are available
at all times.
The
Best of Florida Workshops could accommodate more
than 4 participants per segment; but by keeping
the group size small, you will have unparalleled
access to the workshop conductor, and you will
not miss a photographic opportunity because someone
was in your way.
In keeping with our main focus (you), each workshop
segment will be limited to only four (4) participants.
This insures that everyone may photograph in comfort
and receive the best personalized instruction. |
